Answer

Individual schools adopt their own system for inviting interest in learning to play an instrument. Sometimes a large number of pupils express an interest and the instrumental teacher will assist the school in identifying the children most suited to learning specific instruments. (To find out more about how pupils are selected click here). The Headteacher will notify the parents that lessons will be available, enclosing a letter of explanation and an application form for instrument hire. Lessons can usually start once the application form has been completed and returned to the school. The Music Service will notify parents when the instrument is available for collection from the Instrument Centre at the John Savage Centre. There may be a waiting period while the instrument is prepared for collection in which case the pupils may begin some ‘pre instrumental training’. If a Music Service instrument is not required (e.g. in the case of piano or a privately owned instrument), the lessons can start once the application form has been completed and returned.
